GUCCI is one of Italy's great success stories in Hong Kong. Established in the territory in 1974, it now has five shops in what it considers one of its top two markets in Asia.
Sales of Gucci products rose by 37 per cent last year in Hong Kong. Shoes were the most sought-after Gucci item among the territory's shoppers, a company spokesman said. Popular new designs included the bubble-toed loafer and the two-strap clog, the spokesman said.
But Gucci's best-selling shoe continued to be the classic loafer which the spokesman said ''was popular with all age groups''.
Other designer goods sold by Gucci included fashion accessories such as leather belts, handbags, scarves and shawls.
The spokesman said Hong Kong was an ''extremely important'' market for Gucci in Asia - ''up with Japan''.
''For the luxury goods market, Hong Kong is superb,'' he said.
Gucci's core customers in Hong Kong were young, single and professional males aged between 25 and 40, and wealthy housewives, the spokesman said.
