A PLAN to rebuild a 143-year-old Tin Hau temple in Aberdeen to correct fung shui problems faces opposition from the Antiquities Advisory Board which wants to preserve the structure.

The temple, at the junction of Aberdeen Main and Aberdeen Reservoir roads, has a Grade II listing, meaning it should be preserved ''at all costs''.

The two-hall-style temple was built in 1851 with concrete and bricks as a home for Tin Hau, the Goddess of the Sea.

The temple has two iron bells - one more than 260 years old - a smoke tower and a side hall. The Tin Hau statue in the main altar is guarded by statues for her see-all and hear-all generals.

Other features include wooden sculptures, a wooden bracket system on the roof, and rooftop porcelain decorations.

However, a government statutory body, the Chinese Temples Committee, which manages the temple and 40 others, wants to rebuild the temple because of fung shui problems.
