Chen Jui-fa, 46, faces seven counts of conspiracy to traffic in a dangerous drug, involving heroin consignments ranging from 80 to 400 kg, between 1985 and 1989.

Chen, represented by Gerard McCoy, had intended to oppose his extradition to the US at a hearing scheduled for yesterday, but decided to return voluntarily.

Magistrate Li Zong-er transferred Chen into the custody of the Correctional Services Department pending the extradition.

Prosecutor Lena Chi, representing the US Government, said Cheng was arrested on January 13 on his arrival in Hong Kong according to a provisional warrant of arrest issued by the Eastern District Court in New York.
