I AGREE with Christina Wu of Happy Valley (South China Morning Post, June 2) that the issue of noise at Kai Tak and the issue of noise at the Hong Kong Stadium are two separate issues. The roles these two facilities play in Hong Kong vary greatly in importance.

There are certain forms of entertainment which require a facility such as the Hong Kong Stadium. Its size makes it feasible to facilitate large-scale events and concerts. The other venues here are just too small and therefore, cannot generate the revenue to attract world-class performers and quite often are too small to meet the demands of the Hong Kong concert-going public.

Miss Wu suggests other venues (the Coliseum, the Cultural Centre, City Hall, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, and the Arts Centre) which cannot provide outdoor environment. A big stadium is not an ideal place for a concert. Generally the more intimate the setting, the better. Concerts, however, have now reached a scale where certain performers must play in a stadium venue.

I find it hard to believe, as stated in Miss Wu's letter, that Alan Tam, the concert organisers, and the attendants had any problems with the recent Alan Tam concert held at Hong Kong Stadium. The organisers are licking their lips at the prospects of promoting world-class entertainment, the public wants world-class entertainment and performers want the revenue from a concert of stadium scale.

The only people who have a problem with the Hong Kong Stadium are the residents of Happy Valley. Don't try to make these parties seem like they have a problem with this venue. Trying to generate support with false statements does not work with a well-informed and unsympathetic public.

One reason the residents around Kai Tak have made little opposition about the noise issue there is because they accept it as a part of their living there. Residents around Hong Kong Stadium should accept this place as part of living in Happy Valley.
