FANS of Beyond went wild as the three-man Hong Kong band appeared at a press conference for Commercial Radio 903 to promote independent music.

''We're trying to bring band sound back,'' said Brian Leung, chief music designer for the Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company.

The radio station announced it would bring together 18 to 20 independent music groups in the territory's first large-scale ''Indie-Band'' concert on July 1 and 2.

This is a sign the station is opening the door for some unconventional variety in addition to Canto-pop.

''The station is launching an 'indie' campaign,'' Leung said. ''We're beginning to think it's a bit unhealthy for the local pop scene to focus on one thing.

''We want to provide more choices. One of our music policies is to promote original songs in addition to playing popular music.'' Dozens of indie-bands, or bands that have not yet signed recording contracts, will be introduced to the public.

''Maybe from all these functions some record companies can find out about the bands and sign some contracts,'' Leung said.
