IN a move clearly aimed at encouraging the proliferation of PowerPC architecture among Taiwan's many PC manufacturers, IBM and Motorola's RISC processor division has jointly opened a PowerPC technical centre in Taipei.
The centre will provide hardware, software and chipset support for manufacturers in the region - of which the bulk are in Taiwan. They currently produce about 70 per cent of the world's motherboards.
Initially the centre will support the Taiwan New PC Consortium (TNPC) - an organisation that combines the resources of Motorola, IBM and 28 Taiwan-based PC manufacturers - for the development and promotion of PowerPC-based systems.
GOOD news for local-language desktop publishers: Aldus last week announced the launch of the Chinese version of PageMaker 5.0 program for the Apple Macintosh.
Chinese Pagemaker 5.0 supports a range of features specific to the Chinese language, including the vertical and horizontal composition of Chinese text.
It works with both simplified and traditional Chinese characters.
