THE marathon Carrian case cost taxpayers more than $200 million, Attorney-General Jeremy Mathews said.

He said the final bill for a 281-day trial, which ended in 1987, was more than $90 million, while two related trials concerning Bumiputra Malaysia Finance Limited (BMFL) were likely to involve at least $131 million.

Mr Mathews said the prosecution of the cases was of enormous size and complexity. This was reflected in the time it had taken to bring them to trial.

He said the case involving alleged offences in respect of the Carrian Group of companies had ended in 1987.

The BMFL case was expected to conclude next year.

The trial of the third case, involving alleged corruption in local branches of two overseas banks, had been postponed until the BMFL case ended.
