ORIENT Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has taken delivery of the first of 400 40 ft equivalent units (FEUs) and 200 20 ft equivalent units (TEUs) environmentally safe, temperature-controlled containers.
An additional 760 FEU high cubes are being considered for delivery in September.
Built by Hyundai Precision Industry Co of South Korea, the new containers incorporate the ozone-safe, foam-blowing agent R141B and R134A, a non-chlorine, non-CFC refrigerant.
Through developments in reefer machinery, the performance of R134A as a refrigerant has improved, making it as safe and environmentally acceptable alternative to R12.
In January, OOCL began refitting its older reefer containers with the refrigerants.
OOCL is also one of few companies to start using a ''controlled atmosphere'' (CA) system developed by Transfresh Inc of California.
