A WOMAN accused of committing seven robberies and a theft with her boyfriend was yesterday convicted by a High Court jury of six robberies.

 Tang Wai-wah, 28, had denied all the charges over a two-month period.

  Defended by Robert Forrest, Tang's case was that she was not involved in any of the robberies.

  She said that her confession had been obtained by police who threatened to put her 21/2-year-old child in an orphanage and not to take her, a drug addict, to a methadone clinic.

   The court heard she had only been identified by one of the victims.

   She had earlier been cleared of killing one of her victims after deputy Judge Cannon directed the jury to acquit her of manslaughter.

   Medical evidence showed that Miao Hua-chih, 70, was ''a walking time bomb'' as she had an enlarged heart and could have died at any time.

   The court heard that Miao's mouth was covered with a chemical-soaked cloth by a couple when inside a lift at Fairview Mansion in Paterson Street, Causeway Bay . She was dragged into the lift lobby and robbed. She died from cardiac arrest.

   Tang will be sentenced on Monday, together with her boyfriend Luk Yat-chun who has pleaded guilty to eight robberies and to manslaughter.

   Prosecutor Yasmin Mahommed said the offences occurred between December 9, 1992, and January 25, last year. Four took place in shops and boutiques, one inside the women's toilet in a restaurant, one was robbery of a taxi driver and two in lifts in residential buildings. Over $25,000 was taken. Tang was acquitted of theft in the women's toilet and robbery of the taxi driver.

   It was alleged that a chemical-soaked cloth was used to cover victims' mouths and render them unconscious.
