VEHICLES and commercial businesses have been found to be the main causes of noise pollution in most busy districts of Hong Kong, according to a recent survey.

The survey was part of a joint ''noise measurement campaign'' launched by Green Power and the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong to enhance awareness about air and noise pollution.

The survey, carried out between May 28 and June 4, measured noise levels in 10 districts with most environmental complaints during the past year, covering residential areas, youth entertainment centres and areas along roads.

Results showed the impact of noise increased with traffic and commercial activities in the areas, said Green Power chairman Simon Chau Siu-cheong.

The major culprits in busy districts such as Causeway Bay, Mongkok, Central and North Point were found to be vehicles and shops.

''The average sound level in these areas is 75 decibels during the day. It can be over 89 decibels if there is any on-going road or building construction,'' said Dr Chau.
