THE Heung Yee Kuk yesterday took its campaign against Hong Kong land law changes to Downing Street, warning Prime Minister John Major that in its view allowing women to inherit breached both the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law.

About 40 New Territories people resident in London joined the delegation of 22 clan chiefs and senior Heung Yee Kuk members who arrived in Britain last week to present a declaration to Downing Street.

The group, consisting mainly of restaurant workers and owners, gathered in the centre of London's Chinatown before marching to Downing Street.

Six members of the group led by the chairman of the Sai Kung District Board, Lau Wan-hei, and British-based Hong Kong lawyer David Tang were allowed into Downing Street to deliver their declaration to an official.

The declaration pulled few punches - describing the British colonisation of Hong Kong as an ''invasion''.

They added that the people of the New Territories had never accepted its colonial jurisdiction.
