The publication comes out of the stable of the pro-Beijing Hong Kong Commercial Daily and will cater to the growing number of racing enthusiasts in Guangzhou.

Thousands of copies were distributed free to spectators at yesterday's race meeting.

The supplement to the Daily joins a field of five similar publications in Guangzhou, one of them a racing newspaper and the four others race-day supplements to the Thursday and Sunday editions of daily newspapers.

Hong Kong Commercial Daily vice-president and chief editor Ma Lik said in Guangzhou yesterday that his organisation was concerned with the development of racing as a sport and thought it would be good for the Guangdong community.

Mr Ma, who is a Hong Kong adviser to the Chinese Government, cited the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club as an example of how horse racing served the community.

He said his organisation wanted to make a contribution to the development of racing in Guangzhou, and that the sport would promote the local economy and the leisure life of the city.
