CHINA is stepping up relief work for flood victims in the south as hundreds of thousands of soldiers, cadres and civilians join in the task.
Merchants and residents in Guangdong have donated 13.5 million yuan (HK$12 million) to the relief effort, most of it to go to the western and northern parts of the province.
The Guangdong Civil Affairs Department also delivered 20 tonnes of biscuits, 200 boxes of mineral water and medicines by rail to the northern city of Qingyuan on Monday.
Food supply and prices generally are stable, although vegetables are becoming more expensive, a Guangzhou official said.
The administration had drafted measures to prevent food retailers maximising profits by hoarding stocks, he said.
To cope with demand from nearby provinces, Guangzhou was prepared to increase the supply of pork by 25 per cent and that of the soya bean products.
The city has become a major provider of vegetables to other flooded provinces as the farmers in the suburbs of the city did not suffer much flood damage.
