MORE than 2,300 forged US$100 notes have been uncovered by the Commercial Crime Bureau in the past two days and Macau police are being asked to help with investigations.
Bureau detectives received two batches of high-quality counterfeit notes from a Macau finance company and a United States bank in Hong Kong that has business links with Macau.
In a rare move, bureau officers are arranging with the US Secret Service to have samples of the notes sent to Washington for laboratory examination.
A bureau source said: ''Normally, we send the notes to the US Secret Service men working in Hong Kong, who then carry them to Washington.
''Since the latest discovery is sizeable and the notes are of good quality, we are arranging with the US agents to have samples sent by air to their laboratory which deals with the global problem of counterfeit US banknotes.'' Sources said the bureau had received two batches of fake notes with a face value of US$239,200.
One batch came from the Delta Asia Finance Company in Macau and another was passed on by the Republic National Bank of New York in Hong Kong.
