MR Alvin Chung made some good points about animal welfare in his letter (South China Morning Post, June 22). Most of these were well answered on June 24 by Ms Rosana Lai of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But Mr Chung also asked if there were any other groups in Hong Kong promoting the welfare of animals. Apart from the international conservation organisations which have offices here, there are two local societies which Mr Chung, and others who are shocked by mankind's treatment of animals, may like to join. One is the Hong Kong Animal Rights Association - telephone Mr S. W. Chan on 401 0623. The other is EarthCare, a newly registered charity - telephone Mr H. M. Yeung on 578 0434. However, neither of these organisations would agree with Mr Chung when he says it is acceptable to slaughter species other than dogs. This is similar to saying that we should be racially tolerant of, say, the Indians, but not the Filipinos, Vietnamese or British. Both of these societies promote the idea that we should have compassion for all creatures who are capable of suffering. Is this not logical? Dr JOHN WEDDERBURN New Territories
