A POLICEMAN'S brother who tried to smuggle drugs into Hong Kong by swallowing 65 condoms full of heroin was yesterday jailed for eight years.

  Yeung Chi-hung, 20, was caught with the drugs at Kai Tak airport as he returned from Bangkok.

   Customs officers initially discovered six pellets of heroin hidden in his socks and a cigarette packet, but noticed his stomach was very hard.

  Over the next 25 hours Yeung excreted 64 packages wrapped in condoms, both at the airport and under hospital supervision.

  Yeung, who admitted having triad links, told police he had hidden the remaining six pellets in his clothing because he could not swallow any more.

  Prosecutor Phyllis Wong said Yeung flew to Bangkok on March 5 this year with a friend, Yick Siu-ching, who had promised him $15,000 to smuggle the drugs back to Hong Kong.

  Yeung, who said he met Yick through his triad connections, admitted trafficking 316.8 grams of heroin.

  Defence counsel Susana Remedios said Yeung was tempted by the promise of ''quick money'' after his newspaper stall failed.

  She claimed Yick had ''used'' Yeung who could have died after swallowing the heroin.

  She told the court Yeung felt great remorse especially as his older brother was a policeman.

   Deputy Judge Woolley said: ''This is a particularly bad case in that it was clearly so well organised.

   ''You were persuaded to take risks both with your health and of course your liberty.

   ''Although I accept you have been used by other people, as long as there are people like you prepared to be used the trade will continue.''    The judge reduced Yeung's sentence from 12 to eight years because of his guilty plea and information he had given to police, who are now looking for Yick.
