FAR East Holdings International invests in shares and property and also has a cinema operation and leisure-relatedbusiness. It is diversifying into industrial operations in China.

The company, first listed in 1973 under the name of Cheong Sun Development, came under the control of the Chiu family in 1981.

Through a reorganisation of the Far East Consortium group in 1982, the Chiu family enlarged its shareholding and renamed the company Far East Holdings, which was later changed to its present name.

In 1986, the company took control of Asia Television (ATV) but sold two-thirds of its shareholding later - a third each to Peter Lam Kin-ngok of Lai Sun Group and New World Development Co. It sold its remaining stake in 1989.

In 1989, it took over interests in six cinemas from Far East Consortium and Far East Hotels and Entertainment.

In July 1990, it bought 100 million shares of Regal Hotels International Holdings for about $226.36 million. It sold most of the stake at a profit in the same month.

The company is controlled by the family of Deacon Chiu Te-ken. In July 1990, it paid about $226 million for 100 million shares in Regal Hotels International Holdings and sold the bulk for a profit in the same month.
