FORMER Hong Kong champion horse trainer and New Territories village elder Brian Kan Ping-chee will appear in Western Court today to face a charge of common assault. Kan is alleged to have assaulted a woman social worker during an inheritance protest outside the Legislative Council building on March 22. In the same protest, Legislative Councillor Lee Wing-tat was punched and fell to the ground in agony. Several thousand people from the New Territories and representatives of indigenous groups were protesting against proposals that would enable women to inherit land. The proposals were passed by the Legislative Council on June 22. Police said Kan was charged on Friday after seeking legal advice and was released on $500 bail pending his court appearance.
