ROYAL Navy divers are trying to unravel the mystery of how a container truck got to the bottom of Victoria Harbour, dangerously close to the seawall at the Prince of Wales barracks.

Divers went down early last week to assess the depth of the docking area after learning that three United States Navy ships were to be in the territory for July 4 celebrations.

The ships' captains requested the depth assessment after concerns that they ''felt they hit something'' the last time they docked at the barracks in Central. No damage was reported.

Navy diver Darby Allen said he had seen many strange things in Victoria Harbour, but the rusty 3.5-tonne lorry was by far the most unusual. No container was strapped to the truck.

''It was only about six metres out. None of us could believe it,'' Chief Petty Officer Allen said.

''To me it was just a boring day . . . but then we found this weird thing and have been wondering about how it got there ever since. It's one huge mystery to everybody here.'' Members of the Hong Kong Diving Clearance Unit used three-tonne lifting bags to try to move the truck.
