IN Europe I would go to a church to find peace,'' says Youmna. ''Here I go to the Tsui Museum of Art in the Old China Bank Building. Not many people know about it. That's why I like it.'' The locally-based French jewellery designer who uses only her given name has found more than serenity while gazing at the Chinese antiquities in Hong Kong's first private museum.

Cast an eye over her latest collection and you will probably spot the items inspired during one of those solitary visits.

''My Shanghai pieces,'' confirms Youmna. ''I got the idea for them from a filigree pattern on some porcelain in the museum and they're among my favourites in this collection. I like their intricacy.'' The finely-wrought set comprising bracelet, necklace, ring and earrings in gold and pearls is exquisite. And distinctive. Even without the inscription - every piece Youmna creates bears her unusual name - this jewellery stands out.

It's just over a year since she opened shop in Hong Kong and word has spread. For something special - and spectacular - be sure to visit the small, but elegant showroom in Duddell Street, Central, urge the ladies who lunch and party.

Men too. Included in the new range is a selection of striking cufflinks, plus desk sets and other decorative items suitable for the luxury-loving male, though the real standouts are for women.

Whimsical rings and earrings shaped like mushrooms and pumpkins, tiaras and birds' nests. A choker made of mesh so fine, it feels and folds like fabric. Articulated bracelets and necklaces made up of slender furled leaves, each done by hand. And everything fashioned from gold - ''mostly 21-carat because I like the colour''.
