On the slow boat to Lamma

CAN someone please enlighten me? Despite receiving promises of new, faster ferries and an upgraded, more frequent ferry service on the Yung Shue Wan-Central route, over the past year, as yet nothing has materialised.

The 7.45am ferry is packed to an uncomfortable level every morning, and many people on the 6.40pm one are left without a seat despite paying an additional $6.50 on top of the standard fare, to sit on the deluxe deck.

There is still a ridiculously long gap between the 6.40pm and the next ferry at 8.20pm. Many of us would like the option to leave work later, but the prospects of returning home on the 8.20pm ferry proves a little daunting, particularly if we take the 6.25 in the morning.

Has no one noticed the amount of people who have taken up residence in Lamma over the last year? Many of us live on Lamma because we like to escape the pressures of Central, however, with rising rents, and such an inadequate ferry service, many people are simply choosing to leave Lamma in favour of the convenience of other islands such as Lantau.

A new timetable has indeed been recently erected at the pier in Yung Shue Wan, but pardon me if my eyes are deceiving me, or is it exactly the same as the old one.

Would it really be so difficult to introduce an extra early morning ferry and another between 6.40 and 8.20 for evening commuters? It seems a little unfair to have raised ferry prices on July 1, and still expect commuters to be happy with an already severely inadequate service, before the rise.
