LE BAR Bat, Lan Kwai Fong's exclusive new club, became Le Bar Battery last week when suspected triads caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Six young men wearing white gloves and carrying hammers forced their way into the members-only club just before opening time last Wednesday. Then, according to police, they ''said a few words'' to staff before smashing light fittings and bottles. No one was injured.

Le Bar Bat's managing director, Paul Hsu, suspected the attack was provoked by someone being refused entry to the club, which opened on June 20. But he denied it was triad-motivated. He said nobody at the club had received threats or warnings.

''It is not common, but it is not unexpected,'' he said. ''But I do not expect it to happen again and I am not going to lose sleep over it.'' The club's principal owner, millionaire businessman Allan Zeman, is in Tel Aviv. He said it was ''no big deal'' when he heard, said Mr Hsu.

Mr Zeman owns 60 to 70 per cent of the properties in Lan Kwai Fong.

Detective Superintendent Peter Bacon, who is leading the police investigation, said they had been unable to discover a motive for the attack despite checks by the district's anti-triad section.
