SIU OI-KUEN, 22, is used to a 10-minute walk home alone through a poorly-lit market to her home in Leung King Estate, Tuen Mun, where a woman was sexually assaulted and killed on Saturday night.
But last night two Housing Authority guards escorted her back to Leung Kit House from the bus stop, as part of hastily introduced plans to protect women residents.
''The scheme should have been introduced a long time ago,'' said Miss Siu, a Yuen Long boutique saleswoman. ''I hope it will not be only a temporary measure. The Government should make it a permanent one.'' When she arrives at the bus stop she usually phones her father and asks him to meet her, but last night there was no one at home.
''I was very frightened I might become a victim of the attacker,'' she said.
Miss Siu finishes serving customers at 9.30 pm, but often has to stay behind and tidy up. It takes her nearly an hour to travel home.
Last night, after failing to get hold of her father, she approached the new security post at the bus stop and asked for help. The guards noted her ID card, address, and telephone number.
