ALTHOUGH architecture still lags behind professions like medicine and law in terms of the proportion of women practitioners, an increasing number of women are reaching positions of authority.

According to Andrew Li I-kang, lecturer of the Architecture Department at the Chinese University, the student body consists of about 40 per cent women.

''More and more women are being admitted into our university, an average of 36 per cent of students are female since 1991.'' The number of women students in the Hong Kong University Architecture Department has increased from 90 in 1991-1992 to 107 in 1993-1994 - an increase of 19 per cent since 1991.

Mr Li said this reflected the trend that more women are interested in taking up architecture as their future profession.

''Good architects should be well-rounded with broad academic preparations.

''Extra-curricular activities are also important in expanding students' horizons . . . a criteria which is by no means gender specific,'' he said.
