HONG KONG'S own ''helicopter man'' Sunny Hui has been called up for Asian Games duty in what selectors admitted was a gamble for medal glory.

Selectors made four changes to the original 12-strong squad following last week's Hong Kong Open, which was highlighted by some strong performances from local bowlers.

Hui, a gold medallist at a recent tournament in Beijing, uses the ''helicopter'' style delivery where the ball spins laterally as it travels down the lane, increasing the chances of a strike.

It is a style used to great effect by the Taiwanese.

Vivien Fung, chairman of the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress, said yesterday: ''Admittedly, we are taking a chance by including Sunny. But with his helicopter style, there is a good chance that he will win a medal.

''We have made a few changes basically because some of the bowlers' performances have not been up to scratch.'' Fung was delighted with Hong Kong's performance last week with Franco Lau narrowly pipped for the gold medal in the men's Masters and Melody Yeung winning gold in the women's event with Cat Che finishing third.
