A recent report in International Market News says Hong Kong's status as a trading door to the mainland, coupled with its population of ethnic Indians, is sparking an enthusiastic entrepreneurial spirit among India's business community.

The HKTDC will send a high-level business mission to New Delhi and Bombay next month to investigate opportunities for trade and investment.

The mission's trip, from August 20 to 25, is co-sponsored by the India Chamber of Commerce and will be headed by HKTDC chairman Victor Fung.

The report suggests that Hong Kong companies could follow the Japanese in setting up production bases in India as a means of penetrating the domestic market.

It also said that within Hong Kong's traditional area of expertise, India's garment sector presented solid opportunities because the country's ready-made garment exports had grown significantly over the past five years and totalled US$3.5 billion last year.
