Club goes from crisis to pledges

FURTHER to our piece about the little identity crisis at the Foreign Correspondents' Club, ''60-day'' president Carl Goldstein tells us he will be standing down today, after dropping his correspondent status.

His final task was to be MC yesterday at a rather dignified bunfight between the editors of HK's three daily English-language papers. Each pledged he would never, knowingly, publish a lucrative supplement from a company that makes money from inmates at Chinese laogai. We hope the promises hold in 1997.
