THE Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a relative newcomer to business courses in the territory.

    It was opened in 1991 and its purpose-built campus is based in Clear Water Bay.

  The institution has started to establish itself as one of the centres of excellence for managerial and business teaching in the territory.

  In his introduction to its MBA prospectus, the Dean of the School of Business and Management, Professor Chan Yuk-shee, said it was the aim of the university to run the finest MBA programme in Asia by the turn of the century.

  The associate dean, Dr Leonard Cheng, said the courses would be judged by the quality of the students now beginning to graduate from the university.

  ''We are a new institution and are now going through a process of establishing a reputation here in Hong Kong,'' he said.

   ''People will have a close look at our graduates and make their minds up.

  ''Judging by the jobs they are now getting, I think we are doing well.''   The university as a whole has four schools covering areas such as science and engineering, and it has just under 4,000 students.

  That figure is expected to reach 7,000 by the academic year beginning in 1996, as the university slowly fills its capacity.

  The school of business and management has about 100 staff and much of its work is spent teaching MBA and Bachelor in Business Administration degree courses.

  The university also runs a PhD course for those wishing to pursue a career in research in either business, government or academia.

  The programme is designed to last about four years and much of it centres on research and a dissertation.

  On top of that, there is a programme of specialist seminars designed for business executives.

  Many are day courses and previous topics discussed include portfolio management, financial futures and options, and international financial risk management.

  One of the main elements of the business school's work is the MBA programme, which has been open to about 25 full-time and 60 part-time students a year.

  But this figure is set to expand next year as the university steadily increases the number of its students.

  Dr Cheng said the school would probably enrol 40 full-time MBA students in the autumn, and about 80 for the part-time programme.

  ''We still have capacity to take more students and this means we can increase the size of the programme,'' he said.

  ''The increase in the student intake will mean that we will be able to offer an even greater range and quality of elective courses.''   The university says the MBA course has a global perspective but with a particular focus on business in the Asia-Pacific region.

  Tuition fees for the full-time course are $27,000 a year, and about $36,000 for the part-time programme.
