A CORRECTIONAL Services Department officer who claims he put in more than 1,600 hours overnight special duty in nine months is seeking a declaration that he is entitled to recompense for the work.
In a writ filed with the Supreme Court, chief officer Shau Lin-chi contends that the Commissioner of Correctional Services erred in refusing to admit the claim and compensate him with time off or extra pay.
According to the statement of claim, Mr Shau was required by the Commissioner to perform overnight special duty after hours from September 20, 1991, to June 30, 1992.
The work was to be carried out at the barracks of High Island detention centre from 5.15 pm to 8.30 am at the frequency of one in every three nights and from March 23 to June 30, 1992, one in every two nights.
It is the plaintiff's case that during this period, Mr Shau had performed 107 days of such duty for 15.25 hours per day totalling 1,631 hours which is equivalent to 203 days and seven hours.
