FOR the past month Cityplaza has been not only a shopping centre but an open-plan studio, with two Australian artists busily painting dozens of large panels to make one of Hong Kong's biggest murals.
George and Ilza Burchett (above) are now overseeing the construction of a 400-square-metre mural on an acoustic wall built to hide a massive construction project going on behind it.
The residents of Taikoo Shing have shown a lot of interest in the work in progress. ''One little girl came to visit us every day, and each time she would come a little closer until we had regular chats about what we were doing,'' Bulgarian-born Ilza said.
At weekends, she said, there have been crowds of people gathered behind the rope barriers ''and if I missed a bit, someone would be sure to lean over and point it out''.
The piece, which is a bright Jules Verne adventure-style abstract, should be ready by August 17, and will be on display until 1996.
