LIBERAL Party legislator Henry Tang Ying-yen yesterday refused to say whether he remained opposed to a compulsory retirement scheme - something which his party has proposed as an alternative to the Government pension plan.

Mr Tang, who used to be party spokesman on the topic, has said he would only support such a scheme if it was financially guaranteed by the Government.

He, together with the United Democrats and the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, has championed a central provident fund.

But party colleague James Tien Pei-chun has said he may table a private member's bill introducing a compulsory retirement scheme in an effort to scotch the Government's plan.

Mr Tang said last night he had just returned from holiday and would have to listen to his colleagues' views.
