No about-turn

I REFER to Inside Politics (Sunday Morning Post, July 24) which stated former critics of the Government's package of measures to cool the property market had now done a 180-degree turn in saying the measures had proved very successful. I was quoted in the article as supporting these measures.

I would like to point out my statement that the Government ''has done what it had to do without going too far'' was originally made on the day the measures were announced and that I have consistently put forward this point of view. I may well have been in a minority among commentators at that time, and others may have changed their views, but I have certainly not performed a 180-degree turn.

By attacking the twin problems of speculation on pre-completion sales and shortage of land supply, the Government is adopting the right approach, and there is no need for stronger action at this time to depress prices in the general market.
