Taxi cheats

LAST year I wrote to South China Morning Post complaining about the attitude of taxi drivers. Many complaints followed, through this column, arousing public and government interest in the matter.

The police were very effective and took action immediately. And the problems I had taking taxis to Happy Valley ceased.

However, taxi drivers in Hong Kong are quick to change their tactics. They have now decided to cheat passengers on charges taken early in the day.

Recently, I took a taxi from Happy Valley to the jetfoil pier at 7.30am, looking sleepy and tired as a result of a bad night's sleep.

On leaving the taxi, I first gave the driver two $10 notes which he held in his hands as I tried to get the right change from my purse.

In the interim, the driver very politely turned to me and said: ''Sorry, $10 is missing, you gave me only one $10 note.'' This has happened to me twice in the space of one month and I feel I have a duty to alert the community and police about this.
