HONG KONG windsurfer Lee Lai-shan received a timely boost before leaving to defend her world title in Canada when she was given a direct entry into the finals of the World Championships on Lake Winnipeg. Lee, who is scheduled to leave for Canada with coach Rene Appel and teammates Sam Wong Tak-sum and Ken Wong Hop-hei tomorrow, was awarded a wild card for being one of the world's top five women sailors . The 23-year-old from Cheung Chau, better known in the windsurfing fraternity as San San, heads the world standings with 4,592 points. Second-placed Elena Draoulec of France is on 4,344 points. Lee made history in 1993 when she became the first board-sailor to capture the world, European and Asian titles in the same year. She had successfully retained the European crown in Greece two months ago and is a firm favourite for the world title again on the strength of a string of top-class performances in recent months. Teammates Sam Wong and Ken Wong, however, will have to compete in the preliminaries at the World Championships and must qualify for the final rounds.
