A 14-YEAR-OLD girl tried to kill herself because she could not break off a sexual relationship with her boyfriend, the District Court heard yesterday.

Her boyfriend was arrested four days later and pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of unlawful sex with an underage girl.

His counsel, Duncan Fung, said the defendant also had tried to kill himself while under stress awaiting trial. In mitigation, he said his client, 19, had not threatened the girl and had told police he wanted to marry her.

The case came to light after the girl was interviewed by police in hospital after swallowing a bottle of tablets on November 27, 1992, the day after her 14th birthday.

Prosecutor Patty Lee said the two had first had sex when the victim was 12.

She said they had met through a friend in 1990.

Sometime in April 1991, he had telephoned the girl and arranged to meet her at her home in the afternoon. They had watched television and then had sexual intercourse.
