THE Hong Kong Joint Appeal for Rwanda now stands at $12 million, aid workers in the territory have announced. Revealing the amount as banks closed yesterday, Freda Ng Mei-ling, information officer for Oxfam Hong Kong, said $10 million of the money donated by Hong Kong people had already been used to help aid workers cope with the growing Rwandan refugee crisis. The joint appeal was set up just 21/2 weeks ago on behalf of Oxfam, the Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontieres, and funds are still growing as local people respond to the fact that the emergency in the stricken country looks set to continue. Local businesses and community groups have kept up their fund-raising enthusiasm and countless smaller efforts to raise cash are still in progress across the territory. ''We are all really very pleased,'' Ms Ng said. ''This has been such an encouraging response.''
