AGGRESSIVE commercial team Golden have won a small battle in their on-going war with fierce rivals Instant-Dict by proposing an invitational tournament in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The Hong Kong First Division new boys are competing both on and off the field with Instant-Dict, the other Hong Kong club sponsored by an electronic pocket dictionary. Golden have taken advantage of the break for October's Asian Games by inviting the Vietnamese national team (southern and northern districts) to compete in Hong Kong. Both teams will then fly to Shanghai for the Golden Cup. Golden chairman Simon Wan Chi-lok met officials from the Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation yesterday proposing both tournaments should be held between September 20 and October 15 when most of Asia's soccer leagues take a break for the Asian Games. Wan said he would submit an application to the Hong Kong Football Association to reserve one day at the Mongkok Stadium after the dates of the tournaments have been confirmed. Shanghai and Beijing will make up the four-team tournament for the Shanghainese tournament, which carries US$10,000 prize money, in China. Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh City Football Association have reciprocated Golden's invitation by inviting the Hong Kong club to their annual International Invitation Cup in January. The 15-day tournament will feature seven teams from Vietnam, South Korea, North Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong. But Golden may have to turn down the invitation because of domestic commitments. Former Michelotti and Club midfielder/defender Mark Grainger has been added to Golden's growing list of players.
