FARE dodgers on Citybus have been reported to the company by passengers who have witnessed the crooks in action.
The complaints from law-abiding fare payers have sparked the possibility of a major campaign to catch culprits red-handed. Since last month Citybus vehicles have been displaying notices warning passengers that honest fare payers have been reporting suspected dodgers on certain routes.
Not wishing to publicise details of the ways passengers managed to evade paying, Citybus divisional manager Mark Savelli would only say that on crowded buses some people tended to pay fares which were a few cents short.
The notices warn all passengers that inspectors from the company's Revenue Protection Squad are travelling on buses to catch offenders.
Mr Savelli said not many people had complained.
''But we want to try to encourage customers to be responsible and to remember that they are part of the community and any unwelcome action by them affects their neighbours too,'' Mr Savelli said.
