THE intrigues woven by the political dynasties encamped within the cloistered confines of Beijing's Forbidden City are but nothing compared with what goes on in the courts of the Canto-pop kings and queens here in Hong Kong.

Take FM Select's third birthday concert at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

When planning the line-up, channel director Larry London contacted Polygram, Leon Lai's record company, to discuss the possibility of its star appearing on the show.

Polygram agreed, requesting in turn that Lai be scheduled as the last act to end the star-studded show, to which London agreed.

Meanwhile, somewhere else on the ranch, London's deputy, Angel Leung, was getting the nod from Warner Records for Aaron Kwok and Sally Yeh to be added to the line-up.

The company shook hands on an arrangement for Kwok to open the show and Yeh to close it.

Mmmm . . . you can almost sense the head-on clash of egos, right? Come the night and back stage the drama unfolds when the minders of the superstars realise that all is not as planned.
