WHEN property developers splash out billions of dollars for prime sites on the Central reclamation, they'll be expecting truly perfect land in return.
So it was with some alarm that we heard from one occasional visitor to Exchange Square, whose eyes wandered out of the window during a chat with a banker.
The visitor noticed that in the reclamation below, there was a pipe disgorging slimy grey stuff, with the other end of the pipe disappearing into harbour waters and apparently dropping to the harbour floor - home to 147 years of human excrement.
It appeared that the property developers who were to spend countless billions on this piece of land would, in fact, be buying the world's largest compost heap.
Some would say that given that the new land is slated to be Hong Kong's new financial centre, this would be appropriate.
However, after speaking to an engineer on the project, the truth is rather more whimsical.
