FORMER world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield could make his comeback in Macau - and as early as November - if next month's National Boxing Association (NBA) World Championship title fight featuring Mike ''Hercules'' Weaver proves a hit.
Promoters and sponsors Global Sports Network (GSN) are confident they can orchestrate a comeback fight for Holyfield, who is set for a return to the ring after announcing his retirement in April when he lost his International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Association (WBA) titles to fellow American Michael Moorer.
The last man to wear all three titles before losing his undisputed crown to Riddick Bowe last year, Holyfield, 31, could fight Weaver, 42, for the NBA title in Macau. The NBA is the oldest of all the recognised boxing organisations which also include the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
Weaver, who briefly held the WBA crown in 1980, is scheduled to fight heavyweight contender Bill Corrigan over 12 rounds on September 3 at the 2,500-seat D. Bosco College Ring - the main event of a seven bout tourney in Macau.
The night before the fight, former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, will be presented with the ''Fighter of the Century'' award at a special dinner to honour the ''Greatest''.
''We'll be trying to lure Holyfield for a title fight against Weaver if all goes well with next month's boxing and if Weaver retains his title in Macau,'' said GSN advisor Harold Smith, whose company put together the abortive ''Brawl at the Wall'' in China last year.
Smith did not rule out the possibility of a Holyfield-Weaver bout in the territory.
