THE United Democrats called for the proposed four Legislative Council constituencies on Hong Kong Island to be redrawn to make Southern District a constituency of its own.
It now includes some parts of Eastern District.
In a meeting with Boundary and Election Commission members yesterday, the party said its recommendation was more reasonable than the commission's proposal, because it preserved community identities as well as transport links.
Party vice-chairman Yeung Sum said the commission's proposal to incorporate Chai Wan into Southern District would present difficulties for candidates in running their campaigns.
''They would also have difficulty in serving these two highly heterogeneous areas,'' he said.
As a result, the party suggested Southern District, with a population of about 260,000, should be one Legco constituency and Chai Wan be returned to Eastern District.
