THE lure of the yen has tempted Hong Kong golfers Dominique Boulet and Joann Hardwick to try and break into the lucrative Japanese professional golf scene. While Boulet will this week be attempting to take his first tentative steps to winning his playing card for the Japanese PGA Tour, Hardwick is already considerably closer to realising her ambition of joining the Japanese Ladies PGA Tour. Boulet, 29, departs for Tokyo this morning where he will begin his quest in a 36-hole pre-qualifying event at the Waterhills Golf Club near Osaka purely for foreigners. The Hong Kong PGA Order of Merit champion will be one of 10 foreign players battling for three places in the next qualifying stage a week later. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Hardwick tees-off in the penultimate qualifying tournament for the women's tour at the Katsuragi Golf Club, 90 minutes from Nagoya, this morning. Hardwick has spent much of the past six months as the only Westerner at a golf training school in Japan.
