A TEENAGER who had sex with his 12-year-old girlfriend was sent to a detention centre yesterday. The accused, now 19, pleaded guilty on August 9 to two counts of unlawful sex with an underage girl. After obtaining reports from training, detention and probation centres, Deputy Judge Sujanani, who ordered the teenager be sent to a detention centre, said the boy needed a period of disciplinary training. He told the District Court that the offences were serious as the victim was only 12 when she first had sex. He said it was fortunate that she had not fallen pregnant. In mitigation, defence solicitor Duncan Fung said the teenager had loved the girl. There was no evidence of violence, triad involvement or any attempt to procure the girl for prostitution. Earlier, Mr Fung told the court his client had attempted suicide due to stress after he was arrested on December 1, 1992. He had been in hospital for three days. Prosecutor Patty Lee said the accused and the girl had met through a friend in 1990. He had telephoned the victim in April 1991 and arranged to meet her at her home in the afternoon where they had sexual intercourse. The court heard it was the girl's first sexual experience. Afterwards they went out to eat. They then had sex a second time at the same place, said the prosecutor. On November 22, 1992, the two had sex again. The court heard five days later, a day after her 14th birthday, the girl took a bottle of tablets in a bid to commit suicide because she was determined to end the relationship. The case came to light after she was interviewed by police in hospital. The Crown said the girl's parents were divorced when she was two and she had been placed in the custody of her father.
