MR David L. French (South China Morning Post, August 25) can rest assured that I do indeed find the gyrations of American politicians amusing with regard to the influx of Cuban refugees.
In Hong Kong's case, our Vietnamese refugees were screened by a semi-independent body and those refugees screened out as economic refugees were to be sent back to Vietnam.
The American administration objected to such refugees being forced back into a communist regime and hinted at economic sanctions against Hong Kong should Hong Kong go ahead with such actions.
We have already seen President Clinton's volte-face between his election promises as against his current policy regarding Haitian refugees.
Perhaps Mr French would like a friendly wager as to whether America, with the boot on the other foot as the Post aptly described it, will now force Cuban economic refugees back into the loving arms of the communist regime in Cuba? A. G. FOULKES Mid-Levels
