FAHEEM Khan thought his luck had changed when he avoided a top-eight player in the Cathay Pacific Unisys Open draw - until fate stepped in with an injury.

The Hong Kong-based Pakistani, drawn to meet New Zealander Paul Steel, pulled a groin muscle at the Singapore Open on Thursday and is walking with the aid of an umbrella.

''This is the best draw I have had. Last year I played Jansher Khan in the first round, but now I don't even know if I am able to play at all,'' said Faheem.

Meanwhile, local players had a disastrous day in the qualifiers with all but student Wong Wai-chung losing in the first round.

The 16-year-old junior squad player beat an out-of-form Yang Man-sum 17-15, 15-12, 15-11, but he faces a tough task in his final qualifying match today against Simon Baker of Australia.
