THE Islands District Office is to employ the help of three police launches and two Marine Department boats to ship the ballot boxes to Central on September 18. After the last district board elections in 1991, the then secretary for home affairs, Peter Tsao Kwang-yung, attributed the long delay in counting the votes to the logistics of transporting the ballot boxes from the outlying areas and the fact that some candidates had sought recounts. The final results were not known until 12 hours after voting finished. Assistant Islands District Officer Betty Tam said officials had decided to utilise more launches to speed up the process. She said it would take only 25 minutes from Cheung Chau to Central and half an hour from Lantau.
