A MAJORITY of candidates, totalling 61.9 per cent, are convinced that China will disband the three tiers of political structure in 1997.
Many candidates said they are not discouraged as their three-year term will be approaching the end by July 1, 1997.
Moreover, even if the district boards are disbanded, the new body established by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government will still be constituted mainly by elected seats and it would be better to rally voters' support earlier, some said.
Only 16.7 per cent, 36 candidates, said they did not believe China would dismantle the three tiers of election while 22.4 per cent declined to give a view.
It is understood that most of the ''no comment'' answers came from candidates of the Pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong.
DAB secretary-general Cheng Kai-nam said candidates would not answer the two questions in a Post poll concerning the disbandment of the political structure because the district boards' terms would end automatically with the change of sovereinghty.
