A FRIENDLY round of golf at Fanling yesterday could pave the way for an early season alliance between local idol Tony Cruz and former champion trainer, Brian Kan Ping-chee.
Kan and Cruz wrapped up their morning work to head off to the first tee shortly before 7.30 am and the popular trainer said: ''I'm going to give Tony rides at the start of the season as my jockey is not available because of his injury.
''There is nothing definite yet but we will be talking about it and I am sure we can come to some arrangement,'' said Kan.
But the former champion mentor is definitely lining up his former apprentice Jimmy K. H. Ting for the majority of the rides which have become available because of the accident in South Africa to stable jockey, Felix Coetzee.
The former South African champion, due to start his third season with Kan, broke his leg in a track fall and is not expected back in Hong Kong until November.
''I will use my former apprentice for a lot of the rides. He knows me and my stable and he learned it all with me. He is a good rider who listens and does what he is told.
