AN unemployed man resorted to handling a stolen luxury car in a desperate and futile attempt to raise money for a liver transplant operation for his dying father, the District Court heard yesterday. The father of Ng Yuet-hang died two weeks after his arrest in August last year, the court was told. Police spotted Ng, 26, in the stolen Mercedes, worth more than $1 million, near Butterfly Beach in the New Territories. He was caught after panicking and trying to flee. Ng, who pleaded guilty to one count of handling stolen goods, claimed he had been hired for $5,000 to drive the stolen car by a man called Ah Pau. He was aware it would be shipped to China. Judge Hartmann sentenced Ng to two years' jail after considering the mitigating circumstances. ''He may have been under great emotional stress,'' the judge said.
